Can Someone Help Me out Here?

I don't really get it. It seems that an inordinate amount of crappy art is becoming popular on DA. Is this because of the search function? Is it because all the wanna-bes and faves-whores out there can just type in a few works and find that Kingdom Hearts fan-art more easily now?

I dunno.

And I suppose I don't mean to sound like some jealous hack or something, but it's kinda pathetic what's getting faved these days.

Oh, the popular people who are GOOD are still popular, but I mean I saw a mediocre picture of Princess Toadstood in lingere today with over 1000 faves. That's just sad, larry. Sad.

I guess from now on I'll be drawing Cloud or Sephiroth or Link or Sora so I can get the fan boys and girls to come give me faves. Or maybe, I'll just change all the tags on my art to fit with the searching trends. Why not? Sounds like it's time to try a little 'speriment, eh?

Yea thats true, I think people just fave something because everyone else faves them or because they want that person to watch them or visit their page. XD I don't quite get it myself, but eh let them fave what they will it isn't really my problem and its no big deal being "popular" on the internet. I'd rather have a few close DA friends that care about my wok and give me good comments/crits than a bunch of people who just "cool" or "pretty" just so I can feel popular and get bragging rights.

Your too right, it has been something that has bugged me for as long as I've been here. I hate how Deviant Art could be so easily related to a popularity contest, its quite sad. Your not the only one who feels this way man.

I blame commercial media.

How dare they generate characters that are so appealing to the public that their images, even when poorly reproduced, can attract attention at a near celebrity status! It’s almost as if the people who created these characters have spent thousands of dollars learning how to develop a compelling story with above referred to characters and may have even invested time and money into being attention to them through publication!!!

Those bastards!

Yeah...I agree. I can't believe that some pieces had 1000s of hits just because it is some how related to Kingdom Hearts or Advent Children. I saw a pic of some KH characters, and they looked like they were coloured with crayola crayon...It had over 7,000 hits!!!
I also think if the Avatar has a photo a cute girl you might get a few more hits:P

Everyone comes to the point where they must decide how much they want to "sell out" to "sell" their artwork to the masses. I started with babe wallpapers to get views and since then I've found that fanart gets you way more views than anything else because of searches.

I see nothing wrong with having the occasional fanart done in your own style to draw visitors. People like to see what people like. Original characters may draw a small following but established characters have a ready fanbase. You can be "seeker sensitive" without being a total sell-out (either that or I'm really in denial).
